Us In Brief

AVo main purpose is to champion the rights of marginalized women and girls with a focus on Sex Workers as most at-risk populations. AVo achieves this by engaging women, girls and boys and men in addressing structural causes of violence and stigma which increase the risk of HIV infection for women and girls.

AVo integrates innovation to engage and empower girls and young women in their diversity including LBTQ adolescent girls, cisgender adolescent girls and young women, Young Sex Workers and girls who use drugs.

Achievements

Promoting understanding about sex work as labour through successfully advocating within the local communities for the use of the terms ‘sex worker’ and ‘sex work’.

Advocating that the Palermo Protocol (2000) – the UN convention against trafficking in persons – define trafficking of adults to involve force or coercion.

Securing recommendations to decriminalise sex work and empower sex worker communities in the WHO guidelines on Prevention and Treatment of HIV and Other STIs for Sex Workers in NGO work.

Building a strong and powerful alliance with other district networks of key populations to advocate at national levels for community-led, rights-based programming.
